Can HIV Patients Go Through Hair Transplant Surgery?

Men and women with HIV experience hair loss like anybody else. Therefore, hair transplant surgery becomes a real consideration regardless of their condition. However, whether or not HIV patients are eligible for surgical hair restoration has justifiably generated a lot of discussion and views. The HIV virus is often a taboo subject that is often avoided but it certainly necessary to discuss with your hair transplant surgeon. So are patients with HIV eligible for hair transplant surgery? If the answer is yes, can they undergo the procedure with any hair restoration surgeon or will some refuse to operate on them due to some stigma or unknown reason?

Are HIV Patients Eligible for Hair Transplant Surgery?

Today’s modern hair transplant procedure is performed in a sterile, medical environment. Therefore, whether or not a patient is suffering from HIV is not at all a factor in determining the eligibility of hair transplantation.
However, there have been some reported cases where a surgeon has refused to operate on an HIV patient despite the fact that the surgeon and all of their staff would be completely protected during the procedure. These few cases have caused outrage within the hair restoration patient community, in particular with the prospective patient who was refused treatment.
Discussion about these cases on hair loss forums have led to strong support for the HIV patient however, there was some dissension because surgery exposes blood. Thus, some forum members expressed concern as to whether or not the surgeon and his or her staff could contract the disease during the procedure, especially in the event the procedure didn’t proceed perfectly.
However, these types of cases are far and few between and most hair transplant surgeons will perform surgery on HIV patients just like everybody else. There is no stigma, prejudice and no reason for hair transplant doctors to refuse HIV patients for surgery. Therefore, an HIV patient can definitely go through hair transplant surgery without any uncertainty.

Why Surgeons May Have Concerns Operating on HIV Patients

Hair surgeons feel that the only fear associated with HIV patients who are not diagnosed with AIDS is the contraction of the virus and other diseases. However, by taking the necessary precautions (which are taken normally whether a patient has HIV or not), the risk to surgeons and surgical staff can be effectively eradicated.

Why HIV Patients Should Consider Hair Transplant Surgery Like Everybody Else

A patient with HIV requires a zest for life and a positive spirit - and once you’ve decided to combat the deadly HIV retrovirus, you need to stay positive. Many individuals consider hair to be one of the most important physical features and losing it ultimately affects their overall personality and self-esteem. So fighting baldness by undergoing hair transplant surgery certainly helps to build a positive attitude for living a new life.

Does HIV Cause Hair Loss?

HIV does not directly cause genetic hair loss however, sometimes HIV related medication or stress can contribute to it. Treating hair loss and men or women with HIV can be treated in the same way as everybody else. Regarding surgical hair restoration, both FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUSS (follicular unit strip surgery) are always performed using the necessary precautions whether or not a patient has HIV and can improve one’s appearance when done right in the hands of a skilled hair restoration physician.

How Does Hair Transplant Surgery Work for an HIV Patient?

The surgical hair restoration process is the same whether a patient has HIV or not. Hair is harvested from the donor area by using one of two methods (FUE or FUSS) and are then implanted into tiny recipient sites made by the surgeon in the balding areas. Hair restoration clinics always use a fresh set of equipment, hand pieces, drillers and machines which are immediately discarded after the procedure. The surgeon and their staff always wear the necessary protective gear which includes a surgical mask and gloves. Therefore, everyone is protected during the procedure as the necessary precautions are always made regardless of whether or not a patient has HIV.

Conclusion

As long as a prospective hair transplant patient is healthy, there is no reason not to undergo hair transplant surgery whether an individual is HIV positive or not. That said, the surgeon may decline you for the procedure for other reasons related to whether or not you are a candidate for the procedure. This has nothing to do with being HIV, but everything to do with whether or not a surgeon feels that they can achieve optimal results.

HIV Positive Patients & Hair Transplant

Which method of hair transplantation is carried out in HIV positive patients?

In our clinic, hair transplantation in HIV-positive patients is carried out in a sterile and appropriate environment together with our experienced doctor. The method we apply is the FUE method. This technique is the process of removing hair follicles from the scalp, in form of individual, bilateral, triple follicular units, without any incisions and sutures with the help of a micromotor, which has special tips of 0.6-1.1 mm diameter. It is the only root extraction method used in hair transplantation. Healthy adult individuals with adequate hair in the area between the two ears, we which we call the donor area, are considered suitable candidates for hair transplantation.

What is the FUE Method and how is it carried out?

Follicular units (grafts) are removed from the back and side areas of the scalp with hair and transplanted to the desired area. It is indispensable that the process is carried out by an expert team in order to prevent damage to the natural appearance, hair frequency and donor area.
With the FuE technique approximately 5000+ grafts, in other words, 12,000-14,000 hair strands can be transplanted in one session. Previously it was only possible to carry the technique out in 3-4 days with the help of non-motorized micro tools. With this method only 500-600 grafts in approximately 8 hour could be transplanted but thanks to the micromotor system of today it is possible to extract a high amount of grafts in 2-3 hours.
This is an operation under local anesthesia, where the person’s hair is cut very short and which lasts for 7 to 9 hours. During the first stage, the hair follicles are collected, then a canal is opened to transplant the collected roots and finally the individual sowing of the roots is performed.
The hair in the upper part of the nape and between the two ears do not fall out because they are insensitive to the testosterone hormone and since this hair is used in the hair transplantation it will not fall out despite the later presence of testosterone.
There is no age limit for hair transplantation. If the hair loss area and the donor area of the person are suitable, the hair transplantation can be carried out at any age.

When is the best time for hair transplantation?

The most suitable time for hair transplant is when aesthetic anxiety arises in the patient. Hair transplantation can be carried out in every month of the year. Experts recommend the summer months for hair transplantation  because of the rapid regeneration of the skin and faster hair growth.
After the hair transplantation, thin crusts may occur in the transplantation and donor area. These crusts will wash off like dandruffs and disappear completely in approximately 7-10 days. The patient can continue his daily life by wearing a hat during this period and it also constitutes no problem for work.
After the hair transplantation the hair will start to grow within the first three months. And after 9 months to 1 year after the transplantation the desired look will be achieved.
But let’s not forget; the frequency of the transplanted hair is not enough to make the result of hair transplantation look natural. More hair does not equal a more natural result. The important thing is to distribute the amount of existing hair throughout the open area. If the taken graft amounts is not enough to close the open areas, it is possible to create a full head of hair with small touches and the right distribution. The second important condition for the natural appearance of hair transplantation is to transplant the taken roots with the right angle. This angle depends on the experience of the doctor, the modernity of the used tool and the chosen canal diameter, which differs in every patient.
